The Guild of Swiss Mountain Painters, founded in Grindelwald in 1988, has over 60 active members with a common interest in the mountains and dedicated to upholding and extending the tradition of mountain painting in Switzerland.

Inspired by the beauty and variety of the mountain scenery in the Alps and working in many different techniques and styles, they share a passion for portraying the mountain world and expressing their response to it in visual form.

Exhibitions and painting courses are organised on a regular basis, to enable members to show their latest work and to encourage both members and non-members to improve their skills under qualified tuition in the field.

The last exhibition was held in Grindelwald from 30th May to 21st June 2009. To view a selection of the works exhibited please click here.

The next Guild Exhibition will be held in 2011 in Dietikon, near Zürich.

With a special focus on "Glaciers" the exhibition will open on Saturday 20th August 2011 in the Reppisch Hallen and continue until 1st October. For further information about the exhibition or if you'd like to submit work as a candidate for membership, please don't hesitate to contact us. Click here.

Annual General Meeting 2010 in Interlaken

The AGM this year was held on Saturday 24th April in the Hotel Interlaken.

After a congenial lunch together the Meeting was attended by 23 Guild members. Mr. Kurt Obrist was unanimously elected as the new Guild President, to succeed Mr. Peter Marti after 8 years of service. Mrs. Madlen Fähndrich Campiche was also elected to the committee as Assistent Exhibition Manager. Besides the usual AGM business, the members were informed about the preparations for future exhibitions (2011-13), about Guild participation in the Eiger-Live Mountain Festival in June and this year's Painting Course, to be held in Grindelwald at the end of June.

Join the Fun ... Paint the Eiger!

During the Eiger-Live week visitors to the Mountain Festival could participate in painting a large patchwork image of the Eiger under the guidance of Guild members. Anyone could join in ... and discover that mountain climbing with brush and paint instead of rope and ice-axe is fun too!

Each year the Guild organizes a one-week holiday painting course in Grindelwald for members and non-members alike. For beginners wishing to get started and for experienced painters keen to improve their skills, the course provides an ideal learning opportunity in the midst of spectacular mountain scenery with glaciers, lakes, alpine flowers and waterfalls all right on the doorstep. As in 2008 and 2009, the course this year was led by Heinz Kropf and was declared a great success by all the participants.

Dates: The course took place in the last week of June. Another is planned for the same time next year 2011.

Details: Further information on the course is available here.

16. Ausstellung "Bergwelt 2009" in Grindelwald

Our exhibition last year was held in Grindelwald, in the Curling Hall of the Sports Centre, and was opened on Whit Saturday by the village mayor, Mäni Schläppi, in the presence of the artists, their guests and invited local dignitaries.

Already before Easter the pictures arrived, over 200 in all, for presentation to the selection committee. Altogether 135 works were chosen from 51 member artists from all over Switzerland, including the three successful membership candidates.

Most prominent among all the mountains depicted was naturally the famous trilogy of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau - the undisputed Big Three of the Bernese Oberland - and this not least because it was chosen as the subject of the competition. The members were invited to each bring one new "Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau" painting for the exhibition, which was judged by an independent jury and the results were announced during the opening ceremony.

Congratulations to the winners Peter Marti (1st prize), Josef Haug (2nd prize) and Heinz Kropf (3rd prize).

The Guild wishes to express its grateful thanks to the village and tourist office of Grindelwald for its generosity in making the Curling Hall available for three whole weeks, timed to coincide with the Eiger-Live mountain festival and the special Honorary Guest week. We are also most grateful to the various organisations who offered their financial support, without which it would not be possible to organise an exhibition of this kind, in such a prestigious venue, for this duration, and with the production of a top-quality illustrated catalogue.

Following the opening on Whit Saturday the exhibition was open every afternoon until Sunday 21st June. We were pleased to welcome the large number of visitors who came and hope they enjoyed viewing our paintings of the Mountain World around the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau!
