Museum der Landschaft Saanen

The 15th Annual Exhibition was held in the Museum der Landschaft Saanen during 8 weeks in the late summer of 2008. We were delighted to have the opportunity to present the latest work of our members in the picturesque setting of Saanenland, close to the well-known resort of Gstaad and indeed at the same time as the famous Menuhin Music Festival. Over 100 works were selected by the jury from the 180 submitted, representing 49 members and including 5 successful candidates whom we are pleased to welcome as new members.

Vernissage

In glorious sunshine on the day after the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing well over 100 people, among them Guild members, invited guests and local dignitaries, attended the Vernissage at the Museum in Saanen. To the accompaniment of music by the Youth Music School from the neighbouring village of Rougemont, the guests were welcomed by the Guild President Peter Marti and by Stefan Jaggi, the Vice-President of the Museum. The opening speech was given by the Mayor of Gstaad, Andreas Hurni, who also distributed the prizes for the best "Saanenland" paintings.

With aperitifs to follow, the guests mingled informally and examined the works on display, until the event came to a close around 5.30 in the afternoon.

Peter Marti

The "Saanenland" Competition

Prizes were awarded to the three works which, in the view of an independent local jury, best captured the spirit and essential qualities of the surrounding Saanenland. The judges were particularly keen to recognise works in different media and styles. Our congratulations to the three winners below!

"Montagne enneigée"
Acrylic, 70 x 50 cm
(the work at lower right).
2nd Prize: Theres Cortesi

3rd Prize: Eduard Nydegger

The Visitor's Award For the duration of the exhibition visitors were encouraged to vote for their favourite work, which was then awarded a special prize sponsored by the Museum. Congratulations to Albert Häsler for his painting of the Lauenensee, a well-known local beauty spot, nestling at the foot of the mountains nearby.

Preparations

the paintings were brought ...

On Saturday 14th June the paintings arrived; over 180 altogether from 44 members and 8 candidates. On the following Monday the jury made a selection of 107 works to be exhibited and recommended 5 of the candidates for membership.

The works selected portrayed the mountain world in all its diversity, painted in a wide variety of styles and techniques. Not surprisingly in view of the competition theme, over half of all the works submitted depicted the surrounding Saanenland area. The competition entries were judged by an independent local jury and the results were announced at the Vernissage on 9th August ... see above.

... and hung in the exhibition rooms.

On Monday 4th August the walls were cleared, the screens erected and strings threaded; screws were screwed and nails were hammered, until all 107 works were hanging in position in the two exhibition rooms. With a final polish and numbers check by Tuesday evening, all was ready for the Grand Opening on Saturday 9th August. Also on display were cards and books published by individual members, together with the illustrated exhibition catalogue.

The event was a joint effort by the Guild and the Museum, and we wish to express your grateful thanks to all concerned who helped to make the exhibition such a success. In particular to Mr. Hans Berchten, President of the Museum for his valuable contribution as a jury member, who sadly passed away later in the year; and to Mr. Stefan Jaggi, Museum Vice-President, for his enthusiastic help with setting up the infrastructure and winning the support of local sponsors.
